Role of a School Governor
School governors have a varied and important role…
School governors help the school run effectively, they have three core functions:
The governor role is strategic rather than operational – eyes on, hands off. Governors don’t get involved with the day to day running of a school, instead supporting and challenging the school’s leadership team to drive school improvement.
Governors usually attend six to ten meetings a year. Being a school governor is a commitment and a responsibility, but offers you the chance to see first-hand the impact you can make in improving education for children in your community.
Who can become a governor?
Almost anyone over 18 years of age can become a governor. There are no particular qualifications or requirements, other than a willingness to give time to the role and a capacity for working with other people. Governors bring a range of experience and interests from many walks of life. They need to work closely with other governors to make good decisions, and to make sure their decisions are followed up. It helps to be a good listener – you - you will stand a much better chance of understanding how the school ticks. You don't need to be a parent to have the makings of a good governor. Those involved in the local business community or retired people also have much to offer.
